Brody Sweeney has a very down to earth style of delivery that appeals to audiences as he relays his own very personal story on how he built O’Brien Sandwich Bars. He talks common sense which is of practical use and leaves the audience inspired.
He founded O'Briens Sandwich Bars in 1988 (www.obriens.ie). With more than 300 outlets in 12 countries, and employing nearly 3,000 people, it has become one of Ireland's most visible and successful export brands. Brody is a co-founder of African Connections the new charity twinning business and civil society in Ireland and Ethiopia. He is a Trustee of DCU Educational Trust, a Board member of Suaimhneas Clubhouse, and outreach centre for those suffering from Mental Illnesses, and NFTE - The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. He is also on the Board of Paddy Power PLC.
Brody Sweeney started tapping into his entrepreneurial flair and creative drive in his teens and experienced many near disasters before he started O’Brien’s. Having been expelled from school at 16 for ‘ his wrong attitude’ and failing to complete his business degree, Brody used his practical approach and got hands on experience in business and franchising at his father's franchising business Prontoprint.
Since the opening of the first Store in 1988, Brody and his management team have successfully opened over 300 outlets in Ireland, UK, Netherlands, Spain, S. Africa, Australia and Asia (India, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia). The U.K. is the largest market with over 150 stores, mostly franchised. O’Brien’s is the largest Gourmet Sandwich and Coffee chain in the U.K. and Ireland, and one of the fastest growing Restaurant chains in Europe. O’Brien’s plans to grow to 1,000 stores over the next 5 years.
Brody Sweeney has delivered motivational, entrepreneurial and business talks to companies such as Smithkline Beecham, Compass Group, Arthur Cox, O2, Shell, Department of Foreign Affairs, Women’s Network Ireland, Bank Of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, Enterprise Ireland to name but a few. A DVD of a recent motivational speech is available.
Brody’s bestselling book “Making Bread - How to start up and stay up in business” was published by Liberties Press in Autumn 2005.
